Initial thumbnails. I wanted to stick with the theme of making the mask a large part of the design, however did explore out of that theme a bit.

Selected thumbs were drawn up in variations, the bottom being one that I felt would not work regardless, so did no more variations on it. Ultimately chose the levitating version.

Since these three ideations were so similar I was given feedback that this would be better suited as a movement study, or different means of attack. For example, the left being a flailing motion, the middle an entangling one, and the right the neutral.

Final lineart. The "neutral" pose was chosen because it fully displayed the heart shaped mask silhouette that I was trying to capture.

Redesign of the villain and main monster of Majora's Mask, Majora. I decided to go with his first form, which is essentially a hovering mask, so I chose to retain the original silhouette and general color palette while deciding to make an organic monster with parts that seem to symbolize decay and cancer. I referenced everything from human intestines and embryos to sea life, and even at one time thought about decayed vegetation or fungi as an additional element. I wanted the creature to seem to have been merged with or formed from an unfortunate soul who perhaps was consumed by some kind of parasitic entity that used their body to create this monstrosity.
